July 19th, 2016 Catholic Charities Pee Dee (CCPD) held a produce distribution in Georgetown, SC. Produce distribution events have become a summer staple in the Pee Dee office, as part of their outreach services to those individuals and families that live outside of the immediate jurisdiction of the Conway office and food pantry. CCPD partnered with Baskervill Food Pantry on this particular event to provide 4,332 pounds of fresh produce to 396 individuals.
There are many areas throughout the CCPD coverage area, where clients have to travel many miles to access a local food pantry, and they still are not able to access fresh produce and health options for their families. These events allow CCPD to increase access to healthy foods by strategically setting up visits in counties like Georgetown, where there are food deserts and families living below the self-sufficiency standards. In Georgetown County the food insecurity rate is 17%, with an 8% rate of limited access to healthy foods, 59% of the children being eligible for free lunches, 41.5% of the population living in rural settings, and 21% of the population living below the poverty level.
CCPD is always working to improve our programing and services to the outlining counties in our jurisdiction. If you would like to make a donations, please click
